The OG affordable audiophile entry point, still going strong after 12 years. A Modi DAC feeding a Magni amp — clean, transparent, and practically indestructible. Back when "good audio for under $200" was a revolutionary idea, Schiit just... did it. Mine has survived multiple moves, a cat, and one unfortunate coffee incident. If it ever dies I'll buy the exact same thing again.
The Massdrop collab that put reference-tier sound in reach of normal humans. Open-back, so everyone around you gets to enjoy your music too — feature, not a bug. The midrange on these is almost unfairly good. Vocals sound like the singer is standing in your room being slightly judgmental about your playlist. Pairs beautifully with the Schiit stack.
Daily driver for on-the-go. The ANC is genuinely impressive — flip it on in a coffee shop and the world just... goes away. Transparency mode is equally wild, like you're not wearing anything at all. The spatial audio stuff is neat for movies but I mostly just use these to make my commute tolerable. Apple's ecosystem lock-in works because the product is actually good. Annoying.
The travel/flight headphones. Bose has been doing noise canceling longer than most companies have existed, and it shows. These aren't trying to be audiophile gear — they're trying to make a 6-hour flight feel like you're sitting in a quiet room, and they absolutely nail it. Comfort is unreal for long sessions. Sound quality is "good enough" which is exactly right for 35,000 feet.
Used for meetings. It works. Honestly the mic array on recent MacBooks is shockingly decent — good enough that nobody on the other end of a Zoom call has ever complained, and I've never felt the need to buy a dedicated USB mic. The bar for "meeting audio" is so low that Apple clears it effortlessly. Maybe one day I'll get a proper mic for recording, but today is not that day.
